Frequently Asked Questions

What is Muscle Activation Techniques?

MAT is a neuromuscular assessment and treatment system designed to identify and improve inhibited muscle function.

Is MAT the same as physical therapy?

No. MAT is not physical therapy. While both evaluate movement, MAT specifically focuses on restoring muscle contractile function through neuromuscular assessment and activation.

How is MAT different from Physical Therapy or Chiropractic care?

Physical therapy primarily focuses on acute rehabilitation following an injury or surgery. Chiropractic care focuses on joint alignment and manipulation. MAT® specifically evaluates neuromuscular function—testing whether individual muscles can contract on command under force.

Can MAT help after physical therapy?

Many clients begin MAT after completing physical therapy to continue improving strength, stability, and movement quality.

Do I need to be injured?

Not at all.

Many clients seek MAT because they experience recurring tightness, strength plateaus, or want to improve athletic performance.

Does MAT treatment hurt?

No. MAT® uses precise isometric checks and gentle digital pressure at muscle attachment points. It is non-invasive and always conducted within your comfortable range of motion.

How long is the initial assessment?

Your first appointment includes a comprehensive evaluation of movement, muscle function, and your goals. Specific appointment length will be discussed when scheduling.

How many sessions will I need?

Every client is different. Your treatment plan depends on your assessment findings, goals, and how your body responds.

How long does it take to see results?

Most clients experience noticeable improvements in mobility and joint stability during their very first session after inhibited muscles are activated. Long-term strength gains develop as we systematically load those newly activated patterns over time.

Can I continue strength training?

Yes. Depending on your assessment findings, training can often continue while addressing muscle activation needs.

Who is strength coaching designed for?

Our coaching is ideal for athletes, active adults, professionals, and post-rehabilitation clients seeking individualized, assessment-based programming.

How do I get started?

The first step is scheduling a comprehensive neuromuscular assessment.

What should I wear to my initial assessment?

Wear comfortable athletic attire (shorts or leggings, t-shirt, and athletic shoes) that allows you to move freely through full ranges of motion.
